Storage on ICDS-ACI

Overview:

The Institute for Computational and Data Sciences provides storage solutions through the Advanced CyberInfrastructure (ICDS-ACI) system. ICDS-ACI is Penn State’s high-performance research cloud. Penn State's ICDS-ACI cyberinfrastructure supports Penn State research computing and hosts a state-of-the-art data center and offers both Active and Archival Data Storage solutions.

Active Storage

ICDS-ACI provides a High Performance Storage Archive (ACI-HPSA) capability that supports users’ processing and research needs for data storage. The storage infrastructure includes General Parallel (GPFS), Clustered Network (CNFS), and Common Internet (CIFS) file systems that interconnect across high speed Ethernet, Infiniband, and Fibre Channel network fabrics. The storage architecture contains:

  1. Active storage pools that provide access to Home, Work, Group, and Scratch directories
  2. Near-line storage pools that provide a long-term and archive storage repository for files that are not needed real-time to support ongoing research efforts
  3. Data management nodes that enable users to move data between the storage pools. Users have access to data that is stored in the Active storage pools and the Near-line storage pools without requiring administrative support

Archival Storage

ICDS-ACI provides a High Performance Storage Archive (ACI-HPSA) capability that supports users’ processing and research needs for data storage. The storage infrastructure includes General Parallel (GPFS), Clustered Network (CNFS), and Common Internet (CIFS) file systems that interconnect across high speed Ethernet, Infiniband, and Fibre Channel network fabrics. Getting Started:

ICDS-ACI is a complex system with a full-service website. Visit the service's Getting Started page for more in-depth information.

Summary

Availability:

  • This is an active service

Requirements:

Information Security:

  • Researchers should always foreground data security considerations when designing research projects
  • ICDS-ACI is one of the university's approved sites for the hosting of Level 3 data, but researcherss should consult with ICDS-ACI staff prior to storing any Level 3 or Level 4 data on ICDS-ACI systems
